2007 CIS Track & Field Championships (Day 2 recap)

2007 CIS Track & Field Championships (Day 2 recap)March 10, 2007 Track and Field

MONTREAL It was all in the family for the University of Lethbridge¹s Steacy clan at the CIS track and field championships at Richard Tomlinson Fieldhouse on the campus of McGill University, Friday.

Jim Steacy set a CIS championship record and Calgary¹s Jessica Zelinka won her three more gold medals to highlight Day 2 of the three-day meet. Two CIS meet marks and nine Fieldhouse records have fallen thus far.

(Live results available at www.mcgilltrack.com, medal updates at www.athletics.mcgill.ca and complete results available at the championship web site:www.cisport.ca/e/championships/track/2007)

Sherbrooke leads the men¹s competition with a whopping nine medals and 75 points, followed in close pursuit by defending champion Windsor (66) and Western, a distant third (35). The Vert & Or lead the medal count with three golds, two silvers and four bronzes. Windsor and Western are a distant second with four medals apiece.

On the women¹s side, Calgary leads the race with 64 points, followed by defending champion Windsor (54) and Saskatchewan (50). The Dinos also sit atop the medal count with four golds, one silver and two bronzes. Windsor is second woth four (1-2-1).

Zelinka won the shotput (14.74m), long jump (5.89m) and 60m hurdles (8.28 seconds) to go along with her opening-day gold in the pentathlon (4,380 pts.). All four gold medal performances were Fieldhouse records.

Steacy won the men¹s weight toss with a CIS meet record of 23.61m. It broke his own mark of 21.59 set in 2005 and was also a McGill Fieldhouse record for Steacy who now owns five CIS gold medals. The fifth-year veteran from Lethbridge, Alta., will shoot for a sixth CIS gold in the shotput when the three-day meet wraps up Saturday.

His sister Heather captured the women¹s weight throw on Thursday with a distance of 15.97m and brother Sean finished fourth in the weight throw.

Sherbrooke, on the brink of its fifth men¹s championship, came away with six medals on the day, including gold medal efforts from rookie John Carle (1000m) and Ben Youssef Meité in the 300m.

³I knew that I could win this race for quite some time,² said Meité, who also captured the 60m sprint late Friday night. ³I trained very hard and I knew that I was the fastest runner after the first 150 metres.²
