SHERBROOKE - Alana Battiston of Toronto, captured a pair of gold medals as the McGill University women's track and field squad finished second of five teams at the Vert & Or open meet in Sherbrooke, Saturday.

Sherbrooke swept the indoor competition, winning the women's division with 126 points, followed by McGill (89), Laval (61), Montreal (8) and UQAC (5). On the men's side, the Vert & Or finished atop the standings with 115 points. Laval was second (73), followed by McGill (65), UQTR (5) and UQAC (4).

The Martlets won six of 16 events, led by Battiston, a fifth-year nutritional science senior who finished atop the podium in both the 60-metre hurdles (9.75 seconds) and the shot put (9.76m).

McGill's other gold medals went to sophomore Aimee Castro (100m, 3:02.43) of Hamilton, Ont., freshman Jessica Porfilio (3000m, 10:19.99) of Longueuil, Que., freshman Nicole Rollins (pole vault, 2.80m) of Windham Centre, Ont., and the 4x200 relay squad (1:51.32), which was composed of Genevieve Blanchard of Sherbrooke, Alexandra Morin-Boucher of St. Gabriel de Brandon, Que., Majenta Whyte Potter-Mal and Kamila Rogic-McLean.

The Redmen won only two events, with Alex Steinbrenner, a mechanical engineering freshman from Montreal, taking the 300m in 36.91 and Nicholas Busque, an agricultural and environmental freshman from Lititz, Penn., who finished first in the pole vault with a height of 4.0 metres.

The fourth meet of the indoor season will be the Rouge et Or Invitational in Quebec City on Jan. 21. A week after that will be the much-awaited 17th annual McGill Team Challenge, a two-day competition slated for Jan. 27-28. More than 20 teams are expected to participate in that event, which is billed as the largest university track meet in the nation.
