Calgary wins national X-country Championship, Wightman Claims Gold

Moncton, N.B. (CIS) - The Calgary Dinos claimed the women's team title at the 2003 CIS Cross Country Championship held at Universite de Moncton on Saturday afternoon, while Queen's Beth Wightman won the individual race.

The Dinos claimed their third ever CIS team banner scoring a meet-low 78 points to distance the Queen's Golden Gaels (103) and the Dalhousie Tigers (116). Victoria (128) and Western Ontario (140) rounded out the top five, while the defending champion Toronto Varsity Blues were limited to a seventh-place finish with 189 points.

The Dinos, who won back-to-back CIS crowns in 1992 and 1993, were led by individual Bronze medallist Shannon Slater, while their four other scorers placed 13th, 14th, 16th and 32nd.

Queen's Beth Wightman won her second individual championship finishing the five- kilometer race in 18:00.44 minutes, more than 14 seconds ahead of Dalhousie's Janice Ashworth (18:14.64). Wightman, who dominated a field of 132 runners, also won in 2001 and had placed fourth last Fall.

Completing the first All-Canadian team are Toronto's Sandy Wells, Western's Shannon Gerrie, Queen's Anne Barrington, and Saskatchewan's Edyta Sieminska. Finishers 8th to 14th become second team All-Canadian.
