BURLINGTON, Vt. - Stephen Douglas of Pictou, N.S., and Brendan Rehal of Dollard des Ormeaux, Que., each won a pair of gold medals as McGill combined to win nine events at the University of Vermont Catamounts' track and field tri-meet, at the Gardner-Collins Indoor Track and Field Facility in Burlington, Vt., Friday.
In the men's section, Vermont placed first with a combined score of 114 points, to finish ahead of McGill (67) and Middlebury College.
The Redmen captured six events while the Martlets won three.
Douglas, a third-year physiology major, took the 1000-metre race in two minutes, 35.13 seconds and ran the third leg of the winning 4x400m relay, which was clocked in 3:33.21.
Rehal, a mechanical engineering junior, ran leadoff on the 4x400 relay and also crossed the finish line first in the 55m sprint with a time of 6.69 seconds.
Other McGill winners included sophomore Keith Esche (high jump, 1.93m) of Lake George, N.Y., freshman Maxime Beaumont-Courteau (pole vault, 4.41m) of Montreal and junior Adrian Walton (3000m, 8:40.00) of London, Ont., plus freshman Laurent-Pierre Scheffer of Laval, Que., and sophomore Andrew Roberts of Montreal, who ran the second and anchor legs, respectively, of the 4x400 relay squad.
On the women's side, Vermont finished first with 125 points, followed by McGill (98.5) and Middlebury (57.5).
Three Martlets won their events, including junior Deborah Lightman (800m, 2:20.34) of Toronto, junior Deenie Quinn (3000m, 10:49.26) of Westfield, N.J., and senior Esther Usborne (pole vault, 3.34m) of Calgary.
The Redmen and Martlets will now prepare for the 13th annual McGill Team Challenge, a 15-team competition billed as the third largest university track and field meet in Canada, slated to be held at Tomlinson Fieldhouse, Jan. 26-27.
McGill will also be hosting the largest university meet, the CIS national championships, March 8-11.
