MONTREAL -- Genevieve Jenkins of Mission, Viejo, Calif., and François Castonguay of Quebec City are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Feb. 26, 2006.
Jenkins, a 21-year-old distance runner on the Martlets track and field team, won three gold medals and a silver to earn female athlete-of-the-meet honours as McGill captured the Quebec university championship in Sherbrooke over the weekend. A senior majoring in English and history, Jenkins dominated the 1500m race in four minutes, 44.33 seconds and anchored two winning relays - the 4x800 (9:58.08) and the 4x400 (4:00.96). She also placed second in the 1000m.
Castonguay, a 6-foot, 180-pound individual medley specialist on the Redmen swim team, won a pair of silver medals at the CIS national championships in Sainte Foy, Que., over the weekend. The 20-year-old physics sophomore who sat out most of the fall semester with a shoulder injury, was clocked at four minutes, 24.16 seconds in the 400-metre IM and also finished second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:04.44.SOURCE:Earl Zukerman
