Jennifer Thomson of Rosemere, Que., and David Faille of St. Hilaire, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending, Jan. 22, 2006.
Thomson, a 5-foot-7 power-hitter on the women¹s volleyball team, posted 56 digs and scored 64 points on 51 kills, 12 aces and seven stuff blocks in only 17 sets as the Martlets swept all five interlocking matches against Atlantic conference opponents in Sherbrooke over the weekend.
The 19-year-old physical education freshman, who played with the Quebec provincial team over the past two years, received an athletic recruitment bursary from the Quebec Foundation for University Athletics and is a strong candidate for CIS rookie of the year honours.
Faille, a 5-foot-9, 160-pound sprinter on the men¹s track and field team, broke a 20-year-old McGill record in the 60-metre race at the Don Wright Team Challenge meet in London, Ont., on Saturday.
The 21-year-old anthropology sophomore was clocked in a silver-medal winning time of 6.94 seconds, surpassing the mark of 6.96 set by Orlando Haughton in 1986.
