Magrath masters Sherbrooke as Martlets win meet

SHERBROOKE - Sophomore Stephanie Magrath, in her first season with the McGill cross-country team, finished first overall and led the Martlets to a resounding victory at the Sherbrooke open meet, Saturday.
The Martlets swept all three podium positions en route to finishing first of three teams in the scoring with 15 points. Sherbrooke finished a distant second with 60, followed by Laval (67).
On the men's side, McGill was second of four teams.
Magrath, a biochemistry major from Johannesburg, South Africa, completed the 4.4-kilometre race in 15 minutes, 57 seconds, edging out second-place finisher Elspeth McGregor, her teammate who hails from Vernon, B.C., by two seconds.
Lauren Whyte of Belleville, Ont., posted a bronze-medal time of 16:06. Other McGill scorers included Deenie Quinn of Westfield, N.J., who was fourth overall (16:16) and Jessica Warren of Oakville, Ont., came in sixth overall (16:29).
Sherbrooke won the men's competition with 28 points, followed by McGill (36), Laval (63) and Concordia 9118). Alex Genest from the Vert et Or, won the 6.6k race in 20:49. Teammate James Poulin was second in 21:02 and McGill's Adrian Walton of London, Ont., snatched the last podium placing with a time of 21:10.
Rounding out the Redmen scoring was Patrick McAuliffe of Seattle (4th, 21:14), Stephen Douglas (6th, 21:31), Anthony Orth of Vancouver, B.C., (10th, 21:50) and James Young (13th, 22:05)
