SHERBROOKE - Lauren Whyte of Belleville, Ont., and Adrian Walton of London, Ont., led McGill to their second straight clean sweep of the Quebec university cross-country running championships, Sunday.

It was the 19th straight conference title for the Martlets and the eight in 14 years for the Redmen.

"We knew what we had to do and it was simply a matter of going out there and executing," said long time McGill coach Dennis Barrett, who won coach-of-the-year honours for both men's and women's divisions. "We were in the right place at the right time. It was exciting."

McGill scored 16 points to easily out-distance second-place Sherbrooke (64), Concordia (74) and Laval (75).

The Martlets took all three podium positions, with Whyte finishing first of 37 runners to win the women's individual title and earning conference MVP honours. In treacherous, ankle-deep mud and snowy conditions, the 20-year-old arts junior completed the hilly, five-kilometre course in 22 minutes, 51 seconds.

Teammate Stephanie Magrath, a 20-year-old from Johannesburg, South Africa, won silver in 23:07and was named conference rookie of the year. Elspeth McGregor of Vernon, B.C., was third in 23:08.

The men's competition was the closest race in Quebec cross-country history, with only four points separating the top three teams. McGill scored 39 points to edge out second-place Sherbrooke by one point and third-place Laval by four. Concordia finished a distant fourth.

Walton, a 22-year-old science and music senior, captured bronze in the 10k with a time of 39:45 behind race winner and conference MVP Alexandre Genest (39:07) from the Sherbrooke Vert & Or and Laval's David Gill (39:25).
