McGill sweeps X-country meet in Sherbrooke

SHERBROOKE (Sept. 27, 2008) - Freshman Melanie Myrand of Pointe Claire, Que., won gold as McGill captured the Sherbrooke Open cross-country running meet at Parc Victoria in Sherbrooke, Saturday.
McGill also took the men's race, led by a silver-medal finish from Sebastien Flynn, a sophomore from Dartmouth, N.S.
Myrand, a 22-year nursing major finished first in a field of 73 women, completing the 4.4-kilometre circuit in 15 minutes, 38 seconds. She was 14 seconds ahead of McGill teammate Brittany Therrien, a freshman from Victoria, B.C., who came in second. Valerie Belanger, from the Sherbrooke Vert & Or, also made the podium with a time of 16:04.
Other scorers for the Martlets were senior Christina Lo Basso (5th, 16:26) of Montreal, sophomore Arielle Beatty (7th, 16:49) of Newmarket, Ont., and newcomer Margaux Bazinet (12th, 17:11), a junior from Ahuntsic, Que.
The Martlets scored 27 points to finish atop the seven-team field, placing runners in first, second, fifth, seventh and 12th. Laval was next on the podium with 52 points, followed by Sherbrooke (63), College F.X. Garceau (128), College de Sainte-Foy (144), College Champlain-St. Lawrence (155) and College de la Pocatière (191).
In the men's 6.6k race, Flynn was clocked in 21:08, some 16 seconds behind race winner Ferdinand Buzingo (20:52), who was tops in a field of 105 runners. Sherbrooke's James Poulin-Cadovius was third in 21:09.
Other scorers for the winning Redmen squad were senior Graydon Snider (4th, 21:13) of Guelph, Ont., freshman Alex Duhault (6th, 21:35) of Calgary, Montrealer Ken Douglas (9th, 21:49), an electrical engineering junior and Daniel Kramer (10th, 22:06), a freshman from Salem, Mass.
The McGill men tallied 31 total points, to finish first of six teams. Sherbrooke was second with 38, followed by Laval (67), College de Sainte-Foy (113), College F.X. Garneau (135) and College de la Pocatière (163).
