MONTREAL - McGill cross-country runner Lauren Whyte of Belleville, Ont., is the Quebec University female athlete of the week for the period ending Oct. 29.
Whyte finished first of 37 runners at the Quebec cross-country championships to win the women's individual title and earn conference MVP honours.
Running in treacherous, ankle-deep mud and snowy conditions, the 20-year-old arts junior completed the hilly, five-kilometre course in 22 minutes, 51 seconds, some 16 seconds ahead of her closest competitor as the Martlets captured the conference championship for the 19th straight year.
Whyte is the sixth McGill athlete in eight weeks to be picked for the Quebec conference weekly award this semester, joining baseball's Michael Tomasetta (Oct. 24), hockey's Charline Labonté (Oct. 3), soccer's Jamie Scholefield (Sept. 26), cross-country's Adrian Walton (Sep. 19) and rugby's Laura Belvedere (Sept. 12).
