MACROZONARIS AND LAGALA SHINE AT McGILL'S MONTREAL OPEN TRACK MEET

MONTREAL - Strong performances from Canadian Olympian Nicolas Macrozonaris of Laval, Que., and Carmen Lagala from the University of Vermont highlighted the Montreal Open indoor track and field meet at McGill University's Richard Tomlinson Fieldhouse, Saturday.

Macrozonaris, running for the Saint-Laurent Selects, captured the men's 60-metre dash in 6.78 seconds but was short of his Fieldhouse record time of 6.56, set in 2002. The 26-year-old sprinter edged out Pierre-Hans Horacius (6.80) of the Perfmax-Racing club and Etobicoke native Emanuel Parris (6.82) of the Sherbrooke Vert & Or. McGill sophomore David Faille of St. Hilaire was fourth (6.96).

Lagala, a 21-year-old middle distance sprinter from Montpelier, Vt., won the women's 600-metre race in 1:31.58, breaking the four-year-old Fieldhouse record of 1:32.22 set by McGill's Sarah Ali-Khan in 2002.

Laval's Genevieve Thibault of Val Belair, Que., won the women's 60m in 7.61 seconds.

McGill, which only had a handful of entrants due to the start of exams, received a gold and silver-medal performance from Zaria Stoffman, an 18-year-old freshman from Vancouver, B.C. Stoffman won the women's high jump with a distance of 1.60m and was second in the 60m hurdles (9.23), a race won by Marie-Eve Dugas (8.71) from the Corsaire Chaparal club.

Other McGill medals were won by sophomore Heather McCurdy (triple jump, 11.09m) of Stirling, Ont., and Alana Battiston of Toronto, who was second in the high jump (1.55).

Keith Esch, a 6-foot-7, 205-pound sophomore from Lake George, N.Y., who played for the basketball Redmen last year, finished second in the men's high jump (1.90m), won by Emmanuel Philippe of the Kilomaitres LaSalle club in 1.95m.

McGill's Rob Salvatore, a senior from Toronto, was third in the shot put with a toss of 11.63m.
