One of the oldest records in Canadian indoor senior men's track and field fell at the McGill Team Challenge yesterday.

Tyler Christopher of Chilliwack, B.C., Adam Kunkel of Paisely, Ont., Keston Nelson of Toronto, and Neal Hurtubise of Coquitlam, B.C., captured the 4x200-metre relay at McGill's Tomlinson Fieldhouse, cutting more than a second off a record set 24 years ago.

The team, all members of the national squad and running unattached, was timed in one minute, 24.85 seconds, bettering the mark of 1:25.89 established by the Prairies Region team at Universite de Sherbrooke on Feb. 27, 1983.

The performance highlighted the 12th edition of the event that saw two fieldhouse and seven meet records also fall as more than 700 athletes - participating independently or from one of 17 universities - wrapped up two days of competition.

Canadian Olympic sprinter Nicolas Macrozonaris of the St. Laurent Selects, one of 10 national-team members taking part, won the 60m invitational sprint in 6.65 seconds, off his McGill fieldhouse record of 6.56.

York's Jared Lewis, however, clocked a meet record of 6.75 seconds in the event for university athletes.

Guelph captured the men's and women's team titles for the first time. Host McGill finished seventh in the men's and ninth in the women's events.

Medalling for McGill were Stephen Douglas, a third-year student from Pictou, N.S., who won gold in the 1,000; Patrick McAuliffe, a senior from Seattle, Wash., silver in the 3,000; Maxime Beaumont-Courteau, a freshman from Montreal, silver in men's pole vault; and Deborah Lightman, a third-year student from Toronto, bronze in the women's 1,000 and silver in the 4x800 relay.
