MONTREAL (CIS) - Six athletes were honoured Thursday morning at the Holiday Inn Montreal Midtown as Canadian Interuniversity Sport presented its 2007-08 track and field season awards.

Honorees included Sherbrooke's Marie-Ève Dugas, Regina's Janine Polischuk, Guelph's Lindsay Carson, St. Francis Xavier's Sarah Skotty, Calgary's Sam Effah, Laval's Tommy Lecours and Western Ontario teammates Andrew Judge and Randy McAuley.
Dugas of Montreal and Effah of Calgary were named outstanding female and male athletes of the year in track events, while Polischuk of Regina and Judge of London, Ont. received the nod for their performances in field events.
Carson of Cambridge, Ont. and Lecours of Quebec City were chosen top rookies, while Skotty of Greene, NY and McAuley of London received the student-athletes community service awards.
Dugas is undefeated this season in the 60-metre and the 60m hurdles and set a meet record in the 60m hurdles (8.43) at the QSSF championships where she was also crowned in the 60m and 4x200 relay. The MBA student is currently ranked first in the nation in her top two individual events, as well as eighth in the 300m. A former CIS rookie of the year in 2004-05 as a member of the UQAM Citadins, she captured CIS gold in the 60 hurdles and silver in the 60m two years ago, and finished second in the 60 hurdles back in 2004-05.
Effah, a second-year communications and culture student, was a triple gold medallist at the Canada West championships in the 60m, 300m and 4x200m relay, and enters the CIS meet ranked first in the nation is his two individual events. Undefeated against CIS rivals this season, he has season bests of 6.72 in the 60m and 34.19 in the 300m.
Polischuk was named outstanding female athlete of the meet at the Canada West championships after she captured individual gold in the long jump, triple and 60m hurdles, to go with a second-place finish in the high jump. The fourth-year kinesiology and health studies student is ranked first in the nation in the triple jump (12.54m), third in both the long jump (5.76m) and 60m hurdles (8.7 seconds), and sixth in the high jump (1.70m) going into the CIS championships. She is defending CIS champion in the triple jump and claimed silver in the long jump at last year's Nationals.
Judge took home a gold medal in the men's long jump with a leap of 7.20m and finished second the triple jump (14.54) at the OUA championships, and enters the CIS meet ranked first and second in the nation in his top two events. The fourth-year King's College arts student hopes to improve on the bronze medal he claimed in the long jump at last year's Nationals.
Carson, a first-year biological engineering student is a dual-sport athlete at Guelph who already enjoyed an incredible rookie season this fall with the cross country program, capturing the CIS individual gold medal, helping the Gryphons women defend their national team title and leaving Victoria with both the CIS female athlete-of-the-year and rookie-of-the-year awards. In her university track and field debut, she took home three silver medals at the OUA championships, finishing second in the 1000m (2:50.58), 1500m (4:31.47) and in the 4X800m (9:16.43).
Carson comes from an athletic family. Her mother, Leslie, snared a bronze medal in the 3000m at the 2001 CIS championships as a 38-year-old student-athlete.
Lecours made noise in his first appearance at the QSSF championships claiming male-athlete-of-the-meet honours after he tallied four medals including gold in the 600m with a time of 1:19.31, the third fastest in the nation this season. The 19-year-old leisure student also has the fastest time in the country this year on 1000m (2:25.67).
Skotty, a co-captain of the X-Women track team, was crowned in the 3000m and was part of the silver-medal winning 4x800m relay at the AUS championships. She maintained a 95.5% academic average this fall in the second year of her education degree. In her community, she is a member of the Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, is the founder and president of the Physical Education Society at StFX, and is involved in a multitude of programs such as Outdoor Active Living, X-Out Bullying and X-Nightline.
Randy McAuley will leave Western Ontario as one of the most storied student-athletes in the athletic department's history. He has set a number of records as both a track and field and football star with the Mustangs, and qualified for his final CIS championships in the 60m, 300m and the 4x200 and 4x400m relays. In the classroom, he will graduate with an honours degree in philosophy with a 75% average. As a musician and member of The McAuleys, he has played at numerous charity benefit concerts and was honoured in 2004 appearing in the Legacy Black History Month Calendar for being an outstanding youth ambassador in London and Southwest Ontario, and in 2006 during Black History Month.
The 2008 CIS track and field championships get under way Thursday at McGill University's Richard Tomlinson Fieldhouse. The three-day meet concludes Saturday afternoon.
The Calgary Dinos women and Sherbrooke Vert & Or men are defending national champions.

Dugas et Lecours honorés pour leur saison

MONTRÉAL (SIC) - Marie-Ève Dugas, de l'Université de Sherbrooke, Janine Polischuk de Regina, Lindsay Carson de Guelph, Sarah Skotty de St. Francis Xavier, Sam Effah de Calgary, Tommy Lecours de Laval et Andrew Judge et Randy McAuley, coéquipiers à Western Ontario, ont été honorés jeudi matin alors que Sport interuniversitaire canadien remettait ses prix individuels pour la saison d'athlétisme 2007-2008.

Dugas (Montréal) et Effah (Calgary) ont été désignés athlètes féminin et masculin de l'année au pays dans les épreuves de piste, alors que Polischuk (Regina) et Judge (London, Ont.) recevaient la même distinction du côté des concours.
Carson (Cambridge, Ont.) et Lecours (Québec) ont peur leur part été élus recrues par excellence de la campagne, alors que Skotty (Greene, NY) et McAuley (London) se sont vus remettre les prix de l'engagement communautaire.
Dugas est invaincue cette saison sur 60 mètres et 60m haies et a établi un record de rencontre au 60m haies (8.43) lors des championnats de la FQSÉ, compétition au cours de laquelle elle a également été couronnée au 60m et au relais 4x200m. L'étudiante à la maîtrise en administration est présentement classée première au pays dans ses deux épreuves de prédilection et huitième sur 300m. Choisie recrue de l'année de SIC en 2004-2005 alors qu'elle portait les couleurs des Citadins de l'UQAM, Dugas avait récolté l'or sur 60m haies et l'argent sur 60m il y a deux ans lors des championnats de SIC, puis l'argent au 60m haies à sa saison recrue.
Effah, un étudiant de deuxième année en communication et culture, a amassé trois médailles d'or lors des championnats de Canada-Ouest, soit au 60m, 300m et 4x200m. Invaincus cette saison face à des rivaux de SIC, il se présente à la rencontre de fin d'année classé premier au Canada tant au 60m qu'au 300m grâce à des chronos de 6.72 et de 34.19.
Polischuk a été nommée athlète féminine par excellence de la rencontre lors des championnats de Canada-Ouest après qu'elle eut récolté l'or au saut en longueur, au triple saut et au 60m haies, en plus de terminer deuxième au saut en hauteur. À l'aube des championnats de SIC, l'étudiante de quatrième année en kinésiologie est classée première au pays au triple saut (12.54m), troisième au saut en longueur (5.76m) et au 60m haies (8.7 secs), et sixième au saut en hauteur (1.70m). Elle avait mérité l'or au triple saut et l'argent à la longueur l'an dernier.
Judge a remporté la médaille d'or au saut en longueur grâce à un bond de 7.20m lors des championnats de la conférence de l'Ontario, en plus de prendre la deuxième position au triple saut (14.54). L'étudiant en arts, classé premier et deuxième au pays dans ses deux épreuves favorites, a décroché le bronze à la longueur lors des championnats de SIC 2007.
Carson, une étudiante de première année en génie biologique, avait déjà connu des débuts universitaires éclatants cet automne lors de la saison de cross-country, remportant l'épreuve féminine de cinq kilomètres, aidant les Gryphons à défendre leur bannière nationale par équipe et revenant de Victoria avec les titres d'athlète et recrue par excellence de SIC. À ses premiers championnats ontariens d'athlétisme, elle a amassé des médailles d'argent au 1000m (2:50.58), 1500m (4:31.47) et 4x800m (9:16.43).
Lecours s'est illustré à sa première participation aux championnats de la FQSÉ, méritant le titre d'athlète masculin par excellence suite à une récolte de quatre médailles, incluant l'or au 600m grâce à un temps de 1:19.31 qui se veut le troisième chrono le plus rapide cette saison sur la distance. Âgé de 19 ans, l'étudiant en intervention sportive est également l'auteur du meilleur temps de la saison au pays sur 1000m (2:25.67).
Co-capitaine de l'équipe d'athlétisme des X-Women, Skotty a remporté le 3000m et une médaille d'argent au relais 4x800m lors des championnats de la conférence de l'Atlantique. Lors du trimestre d'automne, l'étudiante de deuxième année en enseignement a maintenu une moyenne académique de 95.5%. Membre de la Société canadienne de la santé et de l'éducation physique, Skotty a fondé la « Physical Education Society » à StFX, en plus de s'impliquer dans de nombreux programmes comme « Outdoor Active Living », « X-Out Bullying » et « X-Nightline ».
McAuley, qui écoule sa dernière année d'admissibilité universitaire, est reconnu comme l'un des plus grands athlètes de la prestigieuse histoire sportive de Western. Détenteurs de nombreux records des Mustangs tant en football qu'en athlétisme, il participera au 60m, 300m, 4x200m et 4x400m à ses derniers championnats de SIC. Étudiant en philosophie ayant conservé une moyenne de 75% depuis son arrivée à Western, McAuley et son groupe musical, The McAuleys, se produisent dans de nombreux concerts bénéfices tout au long de l'année.
Les championnats d'athlétisme de SIC 2008 se mettent en branle jeudi au stade intérieur Richard Tomlinson de l'Université McGill et se termineront samedi après-midi.
