2008 CIS TRACK & FIELD RELEASE No.2 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MONTREAL (CIS) - There were no surprises in the opening day of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport indoor track and field championships, Thursday.
As expected, the top-seeded athletes, both male and female, captured the highlight event of the soiree.

Calgary's Samuel Effah and Sherbrooke's Marie-Eve Dugas, named earlier in the day as the CIS male and female track athletes of the year, respectively, both won gold in their elite 60-metre sprints.
Effah, a sophomore from Calgary, was clocked in 6.73 seconds, which matched the seventh-fastest time in CIS championship meet history. He edged out York teammates Tyrone Halstead (silver) and Randolph Fajardo (bronze), who were both officially timed at 6.78.
Dugas, a transfer from UQAM and native Montrealer, won her sprint in 7.59, to finish on the podium to remain unbeaten in that event over the season. Ottawa's Christiane Lela (7.63) and Windsor's Noelle Montcalm (7.69), won silver and bronze, respectively.
There were only three other finals on opening night of the three-day meet, held at Richard Tomlinson Fieldhouse on the campus of McGill University.
In the women's weight throw, Lethbridge's Heather Steacy won gold with a toss of 17.93m, to finish ahead of Alberta's Jenilee Way (17.41) and Heather Patterson (16.08) of the Western Ontario Mustangs.
The men's pentathlon was an extremely close competition, with Sherbrooke's Yassine El Fouladi racking up 3,630 points to capture gold ahead of Saskatchewan's Chris Crossley (3,528) and Alberta's Marcus Cunningham (3,459).
In the women's pentathlon, Western Ontario's Jennifer Cotton, scored 3,823 points, to finish ahead of teammate Shellie McFarland (3,665) and Guelph's Brae-Anne McArthur (3,647).

MONTRÉAL (SIC) - Aucune surprise n'est survenue lors de la journée inaugurale du Championnat universitaire d'athétisme de Sport interuniversitaire canadien (SIC) en ce jeudi.

Samuel Effah de l'Université de Calgary et Marie-Ève Dugas de l'Université de Sherbrooke, qui ont respectivement été nommés Athlète féminin et masculin sur la scène de l'athlétisme universitaire plutôt dans la journée, n'ont pas fait mentir leur réputation en remportant l'or lors du 60 mètres tenu en soirée.
Effah a arrêté le chrono à 6,73 secondes, ce qui constitie le 7e temps le plus rapide lors du championnat de SIC. Il a devancé deux porte-couleurs de l'Université York Tyrone Halstead (argent) et Randolph Fajardo (bronze), qui ont fini avec un même temps de 6,78.
Dugas, une étudiante-athlète native de Montréal qui a transféré de l'UQAM à Sherbrooke l'an dernier, est demeurée invaincue cette saison au 60m en remportant l'or grâce à un chrono de 7,59. Christiane Lela de l'Université d'Ottawa (7,63) et Noelle Montcalm de l'Université de Windsor (7,69) ont quant à elles prises les deuxième et troisième place du podium.
Au pentathlon, le représentant de l'Université de Sherbrooke Yassine El Fouladi a causé la plus grande surprise de la journée en remportant la médaille d'or, lui qui était classé 4e au pays avant le championnat. Avec une récolte de 3630 points, le spécialiste des épreuves combinées a devancé de justesse Chris Crossley de l'Université de la Saskatchewan (3528) et Marcus Cunningham de l'Université de l'Alberta (3459).
Lors du 1000 mètres, cinquième et dernière épreuve de l'éprouvant pentathlon, El Fouladi a terminé avec un temps de 2:41,91, soit 13 secondes plus rapide Crossley, qui détenait alors le premier rang avant l'épreuve finale au pentathlon, pour s'assurer de l'or.
Chez les femmes, la favorite Jennifer Cotten de l'Université Western Ontario n'a pas fait mentir sa réputation en l'emportant facilement avec un total de 3823 points. Elle a ainsi dévancé sa compatriote Shellie McParland (3665) et Brae Anne McArthur de l'Université Guelph (3647).
Dans une autre finale qui avait lieu au Richard Tomlinson Fieldhouse de l'Université McGill, Heather Steacy de l'Université de Lethbridge a mis la main sur l'or au lancer poids avec un lancer de 17,93m. Elle a ainsi devancé Jenilee Way de l'Université de l'Alberta (17,41) et Heather Patterson (16,08) de l'Université Western Ontario.
