MONTREAL - Meet MVP Jessica Zelinka finished with a CIS record five gold medals and one silver to power the University of Calgary to a CIS track and field championship, Saturday.
It was the first women's title in 16 years for the Dinos, who previously won in 1987 and 1991. Calgary led all teams in the medal count with six golds, two silvers and three bronzes to finish first of 24 teams with 103 points overall. They clinched the CIS banner in the final race, winning the 4x400 relay to beat out Windsor, the defending champions, who ended up with 86 points. Rounding out the top five was Toronto (76), Western (62) and Saskatchewan (58).
The three-day competition, at Richard Tomlinson Fieldhouse on the campus of McGill University, featured three CIS championship meet records and 12 fieldhouse marks.
On the men's side, Ben Youssef Meité garnered three golds to earn meet MVP honours and lead the Sherbrooke Vert & Or to its fifth national title in 11 years but the first since 1997, when they won for the fourth straight season.
Sherbrooke led all teams with 15 medals (5 gold, 5 silver, 5 bronze) to finish with 138 points, easily outdistancing Windsor (109.5), who also were the defending men's champs. Rounding out the top five was Western (56.5), Calgary (43) and Alberta (40).
(Results are available at www.mcgilltrack.com, medal winners at www.athletics.mcgill.ca and complete results at the championship web site: www.cisport.ca/e/championships/track/2007).
"Clinching it by winning the final race, the 4x200 relay sums up what a total team effort it was for us," said Zelinka, a 25-year-old native of London, Ont., who anchored the final relay and is a member of the Canadian national team. "It feels great... simply amazing."
Zelinka, who has now won performer-of-the-meet honours four times at the CIS championships, set the tone in Thursday's pentathlon competition, establishing CIS meet and McGill fieldhouse records with a score of 4,380 points. She also established fieldhouse marks with gold-medal efforts in the shot put (14.74m) and 60m hurdles (8.28 seconds), then capped that off by winning the long jump (5.89m), the 4x400 relay (3:47.96) and posting a silver-medal finish in the 4x200.
Winning at McGill was old hat for the Sherbrooke men, who have now captured three of their national championships at Tomlinson Fieldhouse, but were unable to win the CIS banner when they hosted the CIS meet in 2000 and 2001.
"You have achieved something that many considered impossible," an emotional Sherbrooke head coach Richard Crevier told his team after winning the CIS banner. "You did everything in your power, pushed yourselves to the absolute limit, but beyond that, you have inspired your teammates to do the same. What you have accomplished today will remain with you for the rest of your lives and will make you better athletes and better persons."
Meité, a 5-foot-9 speedster from the Ivory Coast of Africa, won the 60m and 300m and helped the 4x200 relay squad set a CIS meet record with a sizzling time of 1:26.01.
"I was very happy with my results, especially in the 60m, where I was really focused," said the 20-year-old business sophomore. "I knew that I would do well but it was truly an inspiring result for me. The presence of my brother (Ibrahim) here this week helped me tremendously throughout the meet.
Ibrahim, a Sherbrooke grad, also managed to pull off a triple gold for the Vert & Or in 2003.
