Track and Field (M)
By Earl Zukerman

MONTREAL - The highlight race at the upcoming McGill Open II track and field meet at Tomlinson Fieldhouse, Feb. 16, will be a special 60m invitational sprint featuring national team members Hank Palmer and Nick Macrozonaris.

It will be the third head-to-head meeting of the indoor season for the two teammates from the St. Laurent Selects track club.

Palmer, a 22-year-old Montrealer, was clocked at 6.68 (6.6771) seconds to edge out his rival by a nose 6.68 (6.6779) in the first showdown at McGill's Tomlinson Fieldhouse on Jan. 26. Macrozonaris, a 27-year-old from Laval, Que., ran a sizzling 6.66 in Saskatoon on Feb. 9 to beat Palmer (6.95) and even their head-to-head season series at 1-1.

The McGill Open II is one of two remaining meets on the Quebec university schedule to qualify for the CIS national track and field championships, which will be hosted by McGill, March 6-9.

The Quebec conference championships are slated for Sherbrooke, Feb. 23-24

Over the past weekend, Keith Esch and Stephanie Harris produced the top results by McGill University athletes at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational track and field meet, a two-day competition held at The Armory in New York City.

Esch, a 6-foot-7 international development studies junior from Lake George, N.Y., garnered a bronze-medal performance in the men's high jump with a height of 1.99 metres, just missing the 24-year-old McGill record of 2.01 set by Chris Alliegro in 1983.

Harris, a 5-foot-7, biochemistry junior from Calgary, tossed a distance of 13.23m to finish 34th in the women's weight throw. The result was just short of her own school record (13.28) set last season.
