Guelph sweeps national titles

QUEBEC CITY (CIS) – The University of Guelph Gryphons resumed their domination at the CIS cross country championships on the snow-covered Plains of Abraham in Quebec City as they once again claimed both the women’s and men’s team banners, while Geneviève Lalonde and Andrew Nixon won the individual gold medals, on Saturday afternoon.
It marked the seventh consecutive national title for the Guelph women and the sixth straight for their male teammates, both CIS records. The Gryphons have now captured 19 total team banners, also a CIS mark, six more than Victoria.
In the women’s five-kilometre event, the Gryphons placed five runners in the top 10 to finish with 31 points. Lalonde, who hails from Moncton, N.B., overtook Tamara Jewett of the Toronto Varsity Blues late in the race to cross the finish line in 18 minutes (18:00.04), seven seconds ahead of the Toronto native (18:07.09). Ellen Pennock of Calgary, running for the Victoria Vikes, rounded out the podium with a time of 18:14.02.
Victoria was second in the team standings with 87 points and McMaster third with 134.
"My strategy was to give everything I had from start to finish, and obviously help the team win another title," said Lalonde, who avenged a second-place finish to Jewett at the OUA championships. "I love running here. It was slippery today because of the snow, but it’s such a beautiful setting."
"Geneviève is so solid. We knew Tamara (Jewett) was very talented and fast, so Geneviève had to stay close the entire race if she wanted to have a shot at winning gold," said Guelph head coach Dave Scott-Thomas, once again named the CIS coach of the year.
The Gryphons did even better on the men’s side with five runners among the seven fastest, including a 1-2 finish, for a championship-low 20 points. After capturing the OUA title two weeks ago, Andrew Nixon of Burlington, Ont., won the 10km CIS race in 31:42.8, six seconds faster than teammate Alex Genest of Lac-aux-Sables, Que. (31:48.6). Matt Walters of North Bay, Ont., claimed bronze for the Windsor Lancers in 31:53.8.
In the team standings, Windsor placed second with 49 points, ahead of Victoria (82).
Scott-Thomas was of course very happy with his teams’ results.
"We have a lot of respect for the other universities and the level of competition is very high. Before the races, we made sure everyone understood their role. Once it looked like we had secured the team titles, they all gave everything they had to improve their individual rankings."
Like most runners, male gold medallist Nixon commented that the field was "very slippery and challenging", adding that he was very pleased with the individual and team titles.

QUÉBEC (SIC) – Les Gryphons de l'Université de Guelph ont poursuivi leur domination aux championnats de cross-country de Sport interuniversitaire canadien (SIC), samedi après-midi sur les plaines d’Abraham à Québec, en remportant le titre canadien autant chez les hommes que chez les femmes. Geneviève Lalonde et Andrew Nixon, tous deux membres des Gryphons, ont couronné une journée parfaite avec une victoire au classement individuel.
La compétition s’est déroulée sous une neige constante, ce qui a rendu le parcours extrêmement glissant.
L’équipe féminine de Guelph a mis la main sur un septième titre consécutif, tandis que ses coéquipiers masculins ont décroché une sixième bannière d’affilée. Les Gryphons ont ainsi porté leur total de titre par équipe à 19, soit six de plus que l’Université de Victoria.
Les Gryphons ont cumulé seulement 31 points pour gagner le championnat féminin, ayant pas moins de cinq coureuses parmi les 10 premières. La formation ontarienne n’a cependant pas réussi à s’emparer de toutes les places disponibles sur le podium. Outre la première place de Lalonde en 18 minutes, Tamara Jewett (U. Toronto) et Ellen Pennock (U. Victoria) ont suivi au classement.
Jewett (Toronto), première une bonne partie de la course, a remporté l’argent en 18:07 après avoir été dépassée par Lalonde en fin de course. Pennock (Calgary) a franchi le fil d’arrivée sept secondes plus tard pour le bronze.
« Ma stratégie était de foncer dès le début, et en équipe, on voulait gagner le titre encore une fois. C’était très glissant, mais c’est un si beau parcours. J’adore courir ici ! », a déclaré la championne Geneviève Lalonde.
« Geneviève Lalonde est solide! On savait que Tamara (Jewett) était bonne et talentueuse alors elle devait s’assurer de garder un petit écart pour pouvoir la pourchasser à la fin », a précisé l’entraîneur de Guelph Dave Scott-Thomas
Du côté masculin, les Gryphons placé pas moins de cinq coureurs parmi les sept premiers, dont deux sur les plus hautes marches du podium. Andrew Nixon (Burlington) a parcouru la distance en 31:42, six secondes de mieux que son coéquipier Alex Genest. C’est Matt Walters (North Bay) de l’Université de Windsor qui a pris le troisième rang avec un chrono de 31:53,8.
Au terme des deux courses, Scott-Thomas était bien sûr très heureux de la tournure des événements. « Nous avons beaucoup de respect pour les autres universités et la compétition est forte. On voulait gagner et mettre la table pour l’an prochain. Avant les courses, on a réaffirmé les tâches de tout le monde, et lorsque la victoire en équipe semblait assurée, les coureurs ont donné tout ce qu’ils avaient pour se classer le mieux possible. »
Les Gryphons ont obtenu un excellent total de 20 points grâce à leurs coureurs qui ont terminé respectivement en 1re, 2e, 4e, 6e et 7e position. Les Lancers de Windsor ont terminé deuxièmes avec 49 points.
Le champion Nixon, comme tous les coureurs, a confirmé que le parcours était « glissant et très difficile », et il était très satisfait de sa victoire et de celle de son équipe.
