Justin Darlington, McGill University
"Jus Fly" Darlington breaks oldest-standing track record at McGill
Nov. 28, 2009

OTTAWA - The oldest McGill University record in the books finally fell in the first varsity track and field meet of the indoor season, Friday. Freshman Justin Darlington, a Toronto-born Montrealer, was one of three McGill athletes to win a gold medal and broke a 26-year-old mark in his first collegiate competition, at the Red, Garnet & Grey Tri-Meet in Ottawa.

Darlington, a 21-year-old marketing major who is renowned for his spectacular basketball dunk shots on YouTube.com, won the men's high jump with a leap of 2.02 metres. That surpassed the previous McGill standard of 2.01m held since 1983 by Chris Allegro.

Other McGill gold medals were captured by Melinda Rock of Baie Comeau, Que., and Hayley Warren of Orillia, Ont.

Rock, a 22-year-old physical education junior, won the women's pole vault with a height of 3.01 metres.

Warren, an 18-year-old kinesiology freshman, was first in the 60m hurdles, clocking in at 9.15 seconds.

The second competition of the varsity season will be the McGill Open meet at the Tomlinson Fieldhouse, Dec. 5.
