MONTREAL (Oct. 28, 2008) - Three members of the McGill women's cross-country running team are among seven all-stars announced by the Quebec Student Sports Federation, which also revealed the conference major trophy winners, Wednesday.
Mélanie Myrand of Pointe-Claire, Que., heads-up the Martlets trio, along with Brittany Therrien of Victoria, B.C., and Christina Lo Basso of Montreal.
Myrand, a 19-year-old nursing freshman, won bronze for the Martlets at the Quebec conference championships in Mandeville, Que., last Saturday. She completed the five-kilometre run in 19 minutes, 12 seconds, some 64 seconds behind the the race winner.
Therrien, an 18-year-old English freshman, finished fourth in 19:35, while Lo Basso, a 22-year-old kinesiology junior, was ninth overall in 19:44.
Rounding out the all-star squad is Laval's Catherine Cormier of New Richmond, Que., and teammate Véronique Fortin from Quebec City, plus two other from the Sherbrooke Vert & Or -- Valérie Bélanger of Jonquière, Que., and Marilaine Savard of St-Mathias-sur-Richelieu, Que.
Cormier was voted athlete of the year, while Bélanger grabbed top rookie honours. Concordia's Alaina Garrigan of Camden, Maine was the top student-athlete and Kevin Després, who led laval to the women's team title, was named coach of the year.
