14 Records fall at 10th annual McGill track meet Jan 30, 05
By Earl Zukerman
2004-05 McGill Athletics Press Release #72

MONTREAL -- Three Fieldhouse marks tumbled in addition to 11 meet records at the 10th annual McGill Team Challenge, a two-day track and field meet, billed as the second-largest university competition in Canada, that wrapped up at Tomlinson Fieldhouse over the weekend.

As expected, Canadian Olympian Nicolas Macrozonaris of the St. Laurent Selects, won a special invitational 60-metres race in 6.67 seconds, although he was short of the McGill Fieldhouse record (5.56), which he set in 2002.

Sherbrooke took the overall men's team title, while women's team honours went to Dalhousie. McGill placed sixth in the final standings for both men and women.

Dalhousie's Adrienne Power won three gold medals, setting meet and Fieldhouse records in the women's 60m and 300m sprints. She was also part of the winning 4x200 relay squad, which produced a meet record. The only other Fieldhouse mark to fall was in the men's 4x800 relay, which Laval shaved one second off with a hand-timed 7:40.8 (also a meet record).

McGill won nine medals in the meet, four of them in relay events, including one gold, which came in the men's 4x200. Dan St. Michael -- a sophomore from Renfrew, Ont., who also plays cornerback with the Redmen football team -- anchored a winning quartet that included rookies David Faille of St. Hilaire, Que., Aaron White of Trenton, Ont., and Brendan Rehel of Dollard des Ormeaux, Que. They won in 1:30.56, the fourth-fastest time in the country, edging out Sherbrooke by just. 0.16 seconds.

Andrea White, an 18-year-old arts freshman from Ottawa, took silver in the women's 60-metre hurdles, in a time of 9.34 seconds, only four-hundredths of a second behind Amara Gossin of the University of Toronto. White also ran the anchor-leg of the silver medal-winning 4x400 relay, joining teammates Catherine Foley of Sherbrooke, Que., Camille Costa of St. Lazare, Que., and Sonia Jean-Philippe of Pointe Claire, Que.

McGill qualified for the CIS national championships in one event, the men's 4x800, with a silver-medal winning time of 7:46.5. The quartet was composed of Pat McAuliffe from Seattle, Wash., and Stephen Douglas of Pictou, N.S., plus Toronto natives Jeff McCabe and anchor Marty Fox.

McGill garnered individual bronzes from Hannah Moffat (pole vault) of St. John's, Nfld., Troye Carrington (women's 300m), Tiffany DiRico (weight throw) of Greenfield Park, Que., and Aaron White (300m).

The Martlets also bronze in the 4x200 relay, composed of Foley, plus Montrealers Vanessa Horobjowsky and Maryse Dubreuil, in addition to Troye Carrington of Kitchener.

Dalhousie finished first on the women's side with 63 points, leading all teams with six gold medals in addition to a silver. Toronto was second with 58 points and led all teams in total medals with nine (3 gold, 2 silver, 4 bronze). York was third with 44 points and six medals (3-2-1), followed by Western (43.5; 2-5-0), Sherbrooke (29.5; 2-1-2), McGill (38.5; 2-4-0), Queen's (36.5; 1-0-3), McMaster (12; 0-0-1), Montreal (7; 0-1-0), UQAM (4; 0-0-1), Moncton (3; 0-0-0), Laval (2; 0-0-0), plus Concordia (0), Guelph (0) and RMC (0).

On the men's side, Sherbrooke was first overall with 68.5 points and won the medal count with five golds, three silvers and a pair of bronze medals. Queen's was second with 54.5 (2-3-5), followed by Western (50; 1-2-4), Toronto (49; 2-3-1), Laval (34; 2-2-1), McGill (29.5; 1-1-1), Dalhousie (26; 2-0-0), York (21.5; 1-1-2) and McMaster (8; 0-0-0). Other competing teams that failed to score points were UQAM, Moncton, Concordia, Guelph and RMC.

Dalhousie smashed three other meet records, including Leanna McLean (1500m, 4:26.93), Paul Chafe (3000m, 8:26.41) and two women's relays (4x200, 1:41.05 and 4x800, 9:13.3 hand-timed).

Other meet records were broken by Sherbrooke's Natalie Thenor (weight throw, 16.22m), Toronto's Jocelyn Adu-Guimfi (long jump), plus York's Paula McLaughlin (600m, 1:32.41) and Kristen Matthews (high jump, 1.80).
