Freshman Flynn wins gold, leads Redmen to bronze

MONTREAL - Sebastien Flynn of Dartmouth, N.S., was first of 132 runners to win the men's individual title and guide the McGill Redmen to finish third of eight teams at the McGill Open cross-country running meet on the slopes of Mt. Royal, Saturday.

It was McGill's largest cross-country meet ever, featuring 17 teams and a combined 243 athletes.

Flynn, a 19-year-old arts freshman, ran the six-kilometre race in 19 minutes, 57 seconds, based on runners who finished second, third, sixth, eighth and 10th.

Adrian Walton (20:13), a red-shirted McGill student who was competing as an independent was second, followed by Ryan Armstrong (20:24) from the Western Ontario Mustangs, who won the team competition with 29 points. Williams College finished second (41), followed by McGill (65), Ottawa (117), College Andre-Laurendeau (165), Concordia (166), Dawson College (193) and College St-Laurent.

Other scorers for the Redmen were James Young (9th, 20:44) of London, Ont., Stephen Douglas (16th, 20:52) of Pictou, N.S., Graydon Snider (17th, 20:54) and Anthony Orth (22ndh, 21:45) of Vancouver.

In the women's competition, Western's Leila Angrand was first of 11 entries to capture gold as her Mustangs placed ahead of all nine teams. Angrand completed the 4k race in 14:48, followed by teammate Lynn Mockler (15:43) and Rachel Asher of Williams College (15:44).

McGill's five scorers included Deborah Lightman (11th, 15:59) of Toronto, Patricia Muddiman (12th, 16:04) of Sarnia, Ont., Deenie Quinn (22nd, 16:36) of Westfield, N.J., Christina Lo Basso (28th, 17:20) of Montreal and Hillary Post (28th, 17:20) of Katonah, N.Y.

Western scored 24 points, based on runners who finished first, second, fourth, eighth and ninth. Williams College was second with 35 points and McGill, without their top two runners placed third overall with 102. Ottawa was fourth with 105, followed by Sherbrooke (126), College Ahuntsic (211), Dawson College (213), College Brebeuf (230) and College St-Laurent (234).
