MONTREAL - Distance runners Lauren Whyte of Belleville, Ont., and Adrian Walton of London, Ont., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Oct.29. Both led their respective teams to the Quebec university cross-country running championships in Sherbrooke, Sunday.
Whyte finished first of 37 runners to win the women's individual title and earn conference MVP honours. In treacherous, ankle-deep mud and snowy conditions, the 20-year-old arts junior completed the hilly, five-kilometre course in 22 minutes, 51 seconds, some 16 seconds ahead of her closest competitor as the Martlets captured the conference championship for the 19th straight year.
Walton, a 22-year-old double major in science and music, waltzed to a bronze medal and guided the Redmen to an upset win by only one point over the Sherbrooke Vert & Or for the team's eighth title in 14 years. The 5-foot-11, 145-pound senior finished first of 46 entrants, completing the 10k race in 39:46,
