NEW YORK, NY - Keith Esch and Stephanie Harris produced the top results by McGill University athletes at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational track and field meet held at The Armory in New York City over the weekend.
Esch, a 6-foot-7 international development studies junior from Lake George, N.Y., garnered a bronze-medal performance in the men's high jump with a height of 1.99 metres, just missing the 24-year-old McGill record of 2.01 set by Chris Alliegro in 1983.
Harris, a 5-foot-7, biochemistry junior from Calgary, tossed a distance of 13.23m to finish 34th in the women's weight throw. The result was just short of her own school record (13.28) set last season.
Only two events remain on the schedule to qualify for the CIS national track and field championships that McGill will be hosting, March 6-9.
The second McGill Open meet of the season is scheduled to be held at Tomlinson Fieldhouse, Feb. 16, followed by the Quebec university conference championships, slated for Sherbrooke, Feb. 23-24.
The highlight race at the upcoming McGill Open II will be a rubber match in the 60m invitational sprint between national team members Hank Palmer and Nick Macrozonaris. Palmer was clocked at 6.6771 seconds to edge out his rival by a nose (6.6779) in the first showdown at McGill's Tomlinson Fieldhouse on Jan. 24.
Macrozonaris ran a sizzling 6.66 in Saskatoon on Feb. 9 to beat Palmer (6.95) and even their head-to-head season series at 1-1.
